Every map makes a promise about the ground it doesn’t show, and most of them make it silently. A road atlas doesn’t caption the white space between towns “we surveyed this and there’s nothing”; it just leaves it blank and trusts you to read blank as unknown, not empty. That trust is load-bearing, and it’s exactly the thing a live map is tempted to spend. When the dots are moving and the feeds are warm, a blank patch stops reading as we’re not looking here and starts reading as nothing’s happening here — and those are not the same claim. One is a fact about the map. The other is a fact about the world, and the map has no right to it.

Thyseus is built out of other people’s attention. Detection runs in contributors’ browser tabs, so the map covers the ground those tabs happen to be watching and not one block more. That makes coverage a moving, human thing — it follows where people point their feeds, which means it follows where there’s something worth watching, and thins out everywhere else. The map you get is never a map of the city. It’s a map of the city’s attention, and the honest version has to say so.

A detection is evidence of something. The absence of a detection is evidence of nothing — not evidence of nothing being there. A map that forgets the difference will confidently tell you a street is quiet when the truth is that no one was looking at it.

The gap is not noise you should smooth away

The instinct, once you have a mostly-full map, is to finish it. The blank squares look like a defect next to the lit ones, and every mapping tool ever built has a smoothing pass waiting to help: fill the hole from its neighbours, fade the edge so it blends, let the eye assume the pattern continues. On a map of measured things that instinct is often right. On a map of watched things it’s a quiet catastrophe, because the blank isn’t a missing measurement — it’s the absence of a measurement, and there’s nothing in it to interpolate from. Smooth it and you haven’t filled a gap; you’ve fabricated a reading and drawn it in the same ink as the real ones.

And the fabrication lands worst exactly where it’s most tempting. The lit corridor down the middle of the map is dense and busy, so a viewer’s eye extends its confidence outward — surely the next block over is fine too, look how alive everything is right here. But the next block over might have zero feeds on it. Its quiet isn’t calm; it’s dark. Letting the lit region’s confidence bleed into the unwatched one is the same error as double-counting the busy corners, run in reverse: there the map invented traffic where cameras overlapped, here it would invent calm where cameras never reached. Both times the map lies most loudly about the places people care about most.

Dark has to mean one thing, and mean it out loud

So the load-bearing decision isn’t how to fill the blanks. It’s to refuse to, and to make the refusal legible. A block on the Thyseus map is in one of a few honest states, and the map’s whole credibility rests on never letting them blur: watched and clear (a tab is looking and reports nothing), watched and busy (a tab is looking and reports plenty), and unwatched (no tab is looking, and the map knows nothing at all). The first and the third can look identical to a careless renderer — both are “no dots here” — and they are the two claims a map must never confuse. One is a finding. The other is a confession.

Drawing that line has a cost, and it’s worth naming because it’s the whole point. It means the map volunteers its own incompleteness. It means the coverage number stops well short of a satisfying 100% and stays there, honest and a little disappointing, instead of rounding up to look finished. A demo always wants the full grid lit; the truth is a lit corridor and a lot of dark. But a map that admits “31% of this is under watch right now” is worth infinitely more than one that implies all of it is, because the first one you can act on and the second one you can only be misled by. The unlit squares aren’t the map failing to do its job. They are the map doing its job — reporting the edge of what anyone can currently see.

Honest coverage is what makes the rest trustworthy

There’s a version of this that sounds like modesty for its own sake, and it isn’t. Being ruthless about the blind spots is what earns the lit part its authority. The same discipline that makes Thyseus corroborate a detection before it trusts it, and time-stamp what it shows so a stale dot can’t pass for a live one, runs here too: the map is only allowed to assert what it can actually back. Coverage is just that principle pointed at the empty squares instead of the full ones. A dot you can trust and a blank you can trust are the same virtue seen from two sides — the map saying exactly as much as it knows and not a block more.

That’s also what makes the map get better the right way. Because the blind spots are drawn honestly, they’re legible as an ask: a dark stretch isn’t a flaw to be embarrassed by, it’s an invitation — this is where another open tab would actually add something new, instead of piling a fourth camera onto a corner that already has three. The map’s own honesty about where it can’t see turns into the clearest possible guide for where the next contributor should point. A map built from attention grows by showing, plainly, where attention is missing.

Every open browser tab is a sensor, and together they’re a map — but only ever a map of themselves. The quiet, load-bearing work isn’t lighting up the squares someone is watching. Anyone’s map does that. It’s leaving the rest honestly dark, and making sure a dark square on Thyseus says the one true thing it’s entitled to say: not nothing is here, only no one is watching here — yet.
